Originally known as Kane, Shannon & Weiler, KSW Lawyers was founded in 1973 by three partners. Young and hungry, with a desire to serve the community they called home, they opened an office in North Delta and focused on serving clients in Surrey and the surrounding areas.
Geoffrey Kane along with his pals, Cliff and Bill, started Kane Shannon Weiler LLP in June of 1973. He lived his life to the fullest which included a gardening hobby winning him a national gardening award for the garden he developed at his home in Surrey. The beauty of the garden he created from a bare patch of land is a testament to the magnificence of his own life and is a living memorial to him.
Cliff Shannon’s practice at KSW Lawyers was devoted predominantly to handling complex major loss claims. He was involved in claims involving a broad spectrum of issues, including complex causation and liability issues, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, chronic pain, psychological trauma, significant orthopaedic injuries, fatal accident claims, and complex wage loss claims.
Bill Weiler was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, in 1947, graduating from Lakehead University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and in 1972 from Osgoode Hall with a Bachelor of Law Degree, winning the Bronze Medal and the Commercial Law Prize. After his call to the Bar in 1973 he set up practice in Delta as one of the three founding partners of KSW Lawyers.
In the first fifteen years of practice, we handled a wide variety of practice areas and had a number of interesting and high profile cases. For example, we defended Guilford Volkswagen in a lengthy and complex price fixing case brought against all lower mainland Volkswagen dealers under the Competition Act. We also successfully sued the PNE for misrepresenting the value of their show home prize.
One of the personal highlights of my career was during one of our family law cases. I got to physically hand a 10-day-old baby to her adoptive parents at Children’s Hospital. (We dealt with many adoption cases, custody disputes, and other family law cases.)
At one point we had arguably the busiest real estate conveyance practice, if not in the lower mainland, certainly in the Fraser Valley. For several years we also had a contract to represent Child and Family Services weekly in protection of children cases in Surrey, Coquitlam, and Delta.
During that time, Bill had the reputation as one of the busiest commercial/ corporate lawyers in Surrey/Delta /Langley. And Geoff had a foreclosure practice that rivalled that of Davis and Co -- the leader in the field.
All of this work was performed exclusively by Bill, Geoff, and myself until we were joined by Larry Hagan and Peter Hamilton in 1992.” - Clifford R. Shannon
