WorkSafeBC FAQ

What is British Columbia's workers' compensation board?

WorkSafeBC is the provincial agency dedicated to promoting safe and healthy workplaces in British Columbia. Its mission is to prevent work-related injury, disease and disability. The agency offers a variety of services to help ensure safe working conditions including education, prevention, compensation and support for injured workers, and no-fault insurance to protect employers and workers.

How does the workers' compensation process work?

When an employee gets injured at their workplace in BC, both the employer and employee have an obligation to report the incident to WorkSafeBC (WCB). If the employee submits a claim for compensation, WorkSafeBC begins the process of assessing the claim to determine if, and how, they will be compensated. The employer may object to the claim. If either the employer or the worker disagrees with WorkSafeBC’s decision, the decision may be appealed to the Review Division, and then the Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal.

What is the Workers Compensation Act?

The Workers Compensation Act is a piece of legislation that promotes occupational health and safety and protects workers and other persons present at workplaces from work-related risks to their health and safety. It is intended to ensure that all workers in BC are protected from workplace hazards. If workplace injuries occur, it ensures that injured workers are taken care of and protected from wage loss.

What makes WorkSafeBC claims so difficult?

While WorkSafeBC has a system that is designed to help people who've been hurt on the job, it often ends up causing more problems than it solves. Navigating both the medical and insurance system can be complicated and confusing. Then there's the fact that workers' compensation agencies are always trying to find ways to make things easier on their bottom line - which means denying as many claims as possible.

What is WorkSafeBC's Review Division?

The Review Division is an arm of WorkSafeBC that deals with the judicial review of WorkSafeBC appeals and reviews decisions involving compensation, prevention, or assessments. If you'd like to appeal your WCB decision, the Review Division is where you would start.

What is the Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal?

The Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal is an independent body where workers or employers can go to appeal a decision from WorkSafeBC. They give workers and employers a second chance to appeal a decision that they weren't happy with and are the final level of appeal in the BC workers' compensation system.
